Authorities arrested a 28-year-old former airman Tuesday in connection with a pipe bomb that exploded close to an Air Force recruitment center in Oklahoma.
According to U.S. Deputy Marshal Jeff Johnston, Benjamin Don Roden is set to make his first court appearance Wednesday, The Associated Press reports.
Roden faces charges of possession of explosive materials and destruction of government property following an explosion Monday evening, though he hasn’t yet been formally charged. The blast damaged the doors of the Air Force recruitment center, but no one was injured, as the center was closed at the time.
While the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives first treated the explosion as a possible act of domestic terrorism, FBI agent Jessi Rice clarified Tuesday that line of inquiry had been dropped. Instead, Rice said the explosion could have been a prank or the work of an employee.
In fact, Roden does have a history with the Air Force, having previously previously served in an active-duty position beginning in April 2012. He was decorated with the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. He later joined the Oklahoma Air National Guard in October 2014 and was discharged from the 138th Fighter Wing in April. While at the Guard, he worked as a senior airman tasked with fire protection.
