At least three people are dead after a fire at a Honolulu high rise apartment building, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell told reporters Friday.

The fire reportedly began on the 26th floor of the apartment building, where the three known victims are known to have lived. Authorities believe the fire is now under control, and are attending to five residents and a firefighter for heat exhaustion.

Honolulu Fire Chief Manuel Neves noted that the building did not have a sprinkler system, which may have led to the fire’s initial spread. “Without a doubt if there were sprinklers in this apartment, the fire would be contained to the unit of origin,” Neves told reporters.
