Forget everything that Jurassic Park portrayed about fearsome predators, because CBS News reported Tuesday that the Tyrannosaurus Rex could not even chase its prey.
Researchers in Germany and the U.S. discovered that, when in its prime, a T. rex could only run at speeds of approximately 16.8 mph. Most scientists originally believed that the T. rex could run at speeds of 45 mph, according to the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution. In comparison, the Velociraptor, as portrayed in the Jurassic Park films, would have been able to run at 33.6 mph.
“The T-Rex that we see in the movies is a speedster that races down its prey—and sometimes even cars, in the case of Jurassic Park. For the last 15 years or so paleontologists have been arguing that this view is incorrect, and T-Rex was probably a lot slower,” said paleontologist and biologist Steve Brusatte, according to Newsweek.

Through the use of computer modeling for how a T. rex could hypothetically run, the research concluded that running was not physiologically possible and would have resulted in broken legs, according to research in the journal PeerJ.
