Principal Terrence E. Yarborough was charged with assault and battery after he allegedly spanked a 12-year-old female student in the cafeteria of a middle school in Alexandria, Va., The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Yardborough spanked the student when she refused to pick up trash from the cafeteria floor, according to the Fairfax County police, but said that the incident was “a simple playing around” interaction.

“I said, ‘Girl, if you don’t pick that up, I’m going to spank you.'” Yardborough said.

When the student reported the incident to a teacher, Yardborough was removed from the school, placed on administrative leave, and eventually resigned. Yardborough was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery July 10, and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 4.

“Following due process, FCPS [Fairfax County Public Schools] will pursue the revocation of his teaching and administrator licenses as appropriate, once the criminal case against him is adjudicated,” a FCPS spokesman told Fox 5. “FCPS is committed to ensuring that all students attend school in an environment that is respectful, safe, and where they feel a high degree of trust with the staff who serve them.”
