Tesla founder Elon Musk claimed he received “verbal government approval” Thursday for his hyperloop project, a high speed train that would transport passengers from New York to Washington, D.C. in 29 minutes.

The firm’s project would involve the construction of an underground tunnel connecting the east coast metropolises, a venture that would require cooperation from multiple state governments. Musk did not elaborate on exactly who granted approval to his tunneling venture, The Boring Company.

Musk first introduced the idea in a 2013 white paper, in which he laid out the concept, but he said he was too busy with his other business ventures to purse it at the time. The high speed transportation system relies on underground tubes that propel platforms forward using a magnetic charge, enabling the platforms to travel at speeds of up to 700 mph due to reduced friction.

A White House official would not confirm Musk’s claim.

“We have had promising conversations to date, are committed to transformative infrastructure projects, and believe our greatest solutions have often come from the ingenuity and drive of the private sector,” the official told The Blaze.

Musk’s Boring Company began tunneling under Los Angeles in June to create a similar hyperloop that would connect LAX, Culver City, Santa Monica, Westwood, and Sherman Oaks, Calif.
