Faculty recruitment committees at Harvard University’s public health school are required to take an “implicit-bias training” addressing gendered adjectives, according to a Thursday report.

Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health reported the stipulation, as well as outcomes for the 2016-2017 school year in an end-of-year report discovered by Campus Reform.

The training is intended to “raise awareness of how unconscious bias can infect the recruitment process—for example, when letters use different adjectives to describe male and female candidates—and introduce strategies to minimize its impact.”

More than 100 Harvard public health faculty members took a three-hour “cultural awareness and communication” training in April, which dealt with microaggressions and inclusion on campus.

Harvard students also have a mandatory social justice program. The day-long “Self, Social and Global Awareness” workshop focuses on identity, power and privilege at orientation.

“The program met an enthusiastic reception,” said Michelle Williams, the public health school’s dean of faculty, noting that students were “embracing the opportunity for group reflection and saying they’d like to see this material carried over into the academic year through both curricular and service work.”

Harvard University made national headlines earlier in July when a faculty committee recommended banning frats at the school. Harvard also rescinded the admission offers of at least 10 students in June after uncovering “offensive” memes shared by the students in a private Facebook chat.
