The 41-year-old hard rocker struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for years and has previously said that he contemplated suicide due to his suffering from being abused by an older male when he was a child.

Linkin Park is one of the more popular alternative rock groups in recent memory with two huge hit songs “Faint” and “In the End.” The group also recorded a full collaborative album with Jay-Z.

Bennington was close with Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, who also killed himself by hanging in May. The Linkin Park singer wrote an open letter to his fellow musician after his suicide.

Bennington is survived by his six children whom he had with his two wives.
