A mother and daughter were charged with murder after allegedly dumping the daughter’s newborn baby in a trashcan in South Carolina.

Estela Ruiz-Gomez gave birth to the child in a Greenville Mexican restaurant after complaining of stomach pain, according to local officials, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

After 19-year-old Gomez went to the bathroom and didn’t return, a manager sent Gomez’s mother — a dishwasher at the restaurant — to see if she was alright. After the mother indicated her daughter needed to go to the hospital, a restaurant employee went to the ladies room to empty the trash and noticed it felt heavy.

As the employee dragged the trash bag across the ground towards the dumpster, a newborn ba fell out. Gomez’s boyfriend — also a restaurant employee — retrieved the baby while another witness called the police.

The newborn was taken to the hospital but died shortly thereafter, and a medical examiner concluded that the baby would have survived had they not been thrown into a trash bag. The baby died of cardiac arrest, the Greenville Police Department spokesman Johnathan Bragg said, according to Greenville Online.

Gomez was allegedly arrested Tuesday and charged with homicide. The mother was also arrested and charged with aiding and abetting homicide by neglect, NY Daily News reported.

Homeland Security is purportedly investigating the immigration status of both women.
