The Beijing Culture Bureau (BCB) announced Wednesday that it is banning Canadian performer Justin Bieber from performing in China, citing the popular singer’s “bad behavior.”
China has banned other musicians, such as Maroon 5, from performing in the past, but the country typically cites perceived political statements rather than bad behavior, the BBC reported Friday. Bieber’s Purpose World Tour still has appearances scheduled in Singapore, Tokyo, the Philippines and Indonesia.
“Justin Bieber is a gifted singer, but he is also a controversial young foreign singer,” the BCB said in a statement. “In order to maintain order in the Chinese market and purify the Chinese performance environment, it is not suitable to bring in badly behaved entertainers.We hope that as Justin Bieber matures, he can continue to improve his own words and actions, and truly become a singer beloved by the public.”
China previously allowed Bieber to perform in 2014, and it’s unclear what may have changed since then. However, the 23-year-old posted a photo on Twitter in 2014 of him at the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, which honors convicted Japanese war criminals. Bieber was forced to delete the photo following outrage from Chinese and South Korean fans.
At the time, a Chinese spokesman said he hoped Bieber gained “a clear understanding of Japan’s history of invasion and militarism, and of the source of Japan’s militarism.”
