An immigrant claimed that people trapped inside a suffocating tractor-trailer in an alleged human trafficking incident took turns breathing through a single hole in the wall in order to survive, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The truck’s driver, 60-year-old James Matthew Bradley, was originally spotted outside a Texas Wal-Mart. His trailer was packed with illegal immigrants that were pounding on the walls to get the driver’s attention, but Bradley told investigators he was unaware that people were inside the truck.

“We’re looking at a human-trafficking crime,” San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Sunday.

An immigrant told investigators that he and other illegal immigrants were guided into the trailer to be taken north to San Antonio. Ten deaths have already been reported.

Bradley could face the death penalty for illegally transporting immigrants for financial gain.
