Thousands of job-seekers lined up in Fall Rivers, Mass., Wednesday for the opportunity to sort, package and ship Amazon products to homes across America.
Most of the positions offered in the former textile manufacturing town of Fall Rivers are full-time positions in packing, sorting and shipping, the Associated Press reports. The wages will average $11.50-$13.50 and amount to under $30,000 a year.
Some of the candidates that showed up Wednesday are simply looking to supplement their income, but many were looking to obtain health insurance and other benefits through gaining employment.
The internet behemoth announced in late July that it would hire roughly 50,000 new employees across the nation, with 40,000 of those jobs being full-time. The end goal for Amazon is to ramp up its workforce with 100,000 new employees by the middle of 2018.
The news is interesting given that traditional store fronts and department stores are closing across the nation, but Amazon continues to grow in both size and the scope of its operations. It moved into the grocery marketplace through its $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods in July.
