Arizona Sen. John McCain said in an interview Thursday that thinking a border wall could stop illegal immigration is “crazy.”

McCain told the Arizona Republic, “I’m not against a border wall, OK, but go to China and you’ll see a border wall there.”

“We need technology, we need drones, we need surveillance capabilities and we need rapid-reaction capabilities…but to think that a wall is going to stop illegal immigration or drugs is crazy,” McCain stated.

During the interview, McCain was also asked about President Trump’s recent endorsement of the RAISE Act, which would cut legal immigration to the United States by about half over a period of time. (RELATED: ICE Apprehends 650 Migrants In 4-Day Operation)

McCain responded by talking about lettuce, saying that his justification for migrant workers coming across the border was that they were needed to pick lettuce for Americans.

Those remarks come on the heels of a number of recent headlines about crimes by illegal immigrants.

In Portland, Oregon, an illegal immigrant DREAMer seemingly was not busying himself with lettuce picking, but instead allegedly sexually assaulted two women in the same day, brutally beating and raping a 19-year-old female and then molesting a 14-year-old girl just hours later.
