North Carolina State University’s (NCSU) new multicultural director announced her plans to create a “women of color” exclusive housing option, according to a Thursday report.
Nashia Whittenburg, the school’s director of multicultural student affairs, discussed her vision for the segregated housing in a Tuesday NC State News article, reported Campus Reform.
“The point and purpose is if you are a Latina and you are an engineering major, with a very specific specialization, you may not ever see anybody who looks like you,” Whittenburg told NC State News. “But when you come home, here is your opportunity to get some support and to deal with some of the microaggressions you might have had to deal with throughout your entire day when you’ve been at class.”
NCSU currently has housing options dedicated solely to black males and Native Americans.
“Any student” can apply to such housing, Fred Hartman, NCSU’s executive director of university relations, told Campus Reform, but it is unclear how race impacts admission.
Whittenburg will speak at NCSU’s Symposium for Multicultural Scholars on Aug. 9. The symposium will discuss multiculturalism, as well as facets of identity including race, gender, and sexuality.
NCSU’s multicultural affairs office conducts events like a “Multicultural Graduation Ceremony” and ‘Tunnel of Oppression,” an interactive exhibit in which students experience oppression along a variety of identity lines.
