Former Vice President Al Gore called on the Trump administration to publicize a major climate report highlighted on the front page of Tuesday’s edition of The New York Times.

What Gore may not realize, however, is that the draft climate report TheNYT initially warned could be suppressed by the Trump administration has been publicly available online for months.

Gore also may not know that the climate report is a recurring one that’s released to the public every four years. It’s called the National Climate Assessment (NCA), and the last one was issued in 2014.

TheNYT initially published a “third order draft” of the NCA that’s been online since January, but later the paper switched that out for a “fifth order draft” under review at the White House. That version was not publicly released until now.

Even so, the “fifth order draft” is not final, and Gore may want to wait for the final NCA that’s supposed to be released in 2018. The “Climate Science Special Report” (CSSR) draft TheNYT published is set for release this fall. Gore could wait for that as well.

The NCA is mandated by Congress under the 1990 Global Change Research Act. The CSSR was only released once, however, during the Bush administration.
