CNN pulled a headline Tuesday afternoon referring to a memo issued by the now-fired Google employee, James Damore, as an “anti-diversity memo” changing it to “controversial manifesto.”

“Engineer Behind Anti-Diversity Memo Is Out At Google” read CNN’s initial headline on its CNN Tech website. Roughly half an hour later, CNN changed it to “Engineer Behind Controversial Manifesto Is Out At Google.”

Damore was fired for writing a memo entitled “Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber,” arguing that women are underrepresented in the tech field not because of bias or discrimination, but because of physiological and biological gender differences between women and men. “On average, men and women biologically differ in many ways,” Damore wrote, going on to list the biological differences between the sexes.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai called the memo “offensive.”

“I value diversity and inclusion, am not denying that sexism exists, and don’t endorse using stereotypes,” Damore’s memo began. He argued that the disparity problem at Google is due to political biases, hoping to engineer the outcome they prefer, rather than one that is plausible. Damore also took issue with Google’s educational programs for young women, claiming that they may be misguided.

As part of an ongoing investigation, the U.S. Department of Labor said in April that Google had “systemic compensation disparities.”

“On background, we are constantly updating our stories as we continue to report out breaking news. This includes updating headlines as more content becomes available and is included,” CNN told The Daily Caller News Foundation in response to an inquiry.
