Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky distanced himself from President Donald Trump’s views of the mainstream media Monday afternoon in Kentucky, saying he does not believe the majority of news is “fake.”

“My view is that most news is not fake,” McConnell told a crowd gathered in Lexington, Ky., Monday. McConnell said he makes a concerted effort “to look at a variety of sources every morning,” which includes everything “from The New York Times to all beat publications.”

McConnell appeared alongside Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin in Lexington, Ky., Monday to discuss everything from economic to foreign policy with his constituents.

The senate majority leader’s statement is very different from the message consistently espoused from both the president and members of his administration.

President Trump has attacked CNN, The Washington Post, The New York Times and many other media outlets for what he claims is biased, unfair reporting.

Trump kicked off the week Monday morning with a tweet storm about the “fake news” media.

“Jerry Falwell of Liberty University was fantastic on ,” Trump tweeted. “The Fake News should listen to what he had to say. Thanks Jerry!

The president followed his tweet up with another one in which he claimed “the very dishonest Fake News Media is out of control!”
