Netflix viewership decreased by 10 percent about the same time the solar eclipse occurred Aug. 21, 2017 across much of the U.S.

The video streaming company made the announcement on Twitter in a facetious fashion, a corporal public outreach strategy that seems to be catching on.

“Hey, just wondering why 10% of you chose to watch a giant rock cover a giant ball of gas when I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE FOR YOU,” the tech company tweeted, evidently trying to reference its large stake in the pleasure-viewing market. “But really, there was a 10% drop in plays during the eclipse today. Well played, Moon,” Netflix’s official account for the U.S. subtweeted.

Netflix may also lose further viewers to the eclipse, after Google searches for “my eyes hurt” skyrocketed when the eclipse transpired. People looking to score a glimpse of the natural phenomenon perhaps turned their glance into a gaze or chose not to wear special safety glasses.
