A New Jersey reporter is facing calls for his firing after he described anti-Confederate statue activists as “bigots in black face” in a poem earlier this month.
Al Sullivan, a reporter with the Hudson Reporter, wrote a satirical poem criticizing the protesters who want to remove the Confederate statues after the Charlottesville, Va., riots, reports the Jersey Journal.
“I won’t be part of any rat pack/Of bigots in black face/Deluded into waging a war/They have already won,/Tearing down every bit of history/The way Stalin did/Simply because it offends them,” the poem, called “Pickett’s Charge,” read.
Some people are now calling for Sullivan to be fired over his comments, especially since they came after a white supremacist riot in Virginia
“I can’t imagine how you can sit down and interview a person of color or write about a community of color and not have a tilt on what you say. You’re doing a disservice to people reading the paper and expecting an unbiased and equal opinion,” Asheenia Johnson, policy director for the Jersey City Anti-Violence Coalition Movement, said.
Sullivan also criticized the Black Lives Matter movement in a poem that has since been removed from his blog. In it, he declared that the activists lacked “skill”
“Black Lives Matter / Looking to make history / The way he did / But lacking the skill or conscience / Or more importantly the brain,” he wrote in “Spitting on MLK’s face.”
The Hudson Reporter did not return The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment in time for publication.
