The hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” think ESPN went too far with political correctness when the network removed a commentator from covering a basketball game because his name is Robert Lee.

“We all make terrible mistakes … but at some point you realize that you screwed up and you say, I really need to walk this back. ESPN is still not walking it back,” co-host Joe Scarborough said Thursday. “Will you please talk to them and say, Robert Lee should be announcing in Virginia! We should apologize to him, we should apologize to our fans. And we should apologize to all the new Trump converts because of our stupidity over the past week.”

Scarborough decried the overuse of political correctness and said ESPN should back down and admit it made a mistake.

“It’s such an overreaction. It’s lunacy. It’s political correctness. It’s just stupid,” Scarborough said. “I can’t imagine why ESPN is still holding the line and not backing down and saying, you know what we really screwed up.”

Co-host Willie Geist agreed and said, “With due respect to my friends and family at ESPN, they stepped in it on this one.”
