The Senate Judiciary Committee has reportedly settled on a date for Donald Trump Jr. to provide private testimony regarding his June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer, according to Politico.

While the committee has not yet announced the exact date, Trump Jr. will appear in “the next few weeks,” a source familiar with the matter told Politico. Trump Jr. was called to publicly testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee in July but countered by offering to be interviewed privately and provide documents to the committee.

The committee’s leaders, Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California and GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, vowed in July to compel Trump Jr. and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort to appear in a public hearing under threat of a subpoena, if necessary. The pair agreed, however, to allow Trump Jr. and Manafort to appear privately ahead of any public hearing.

Trump Jr.’s June 2016 meeting with Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya raised questions for the three separate congressional committees investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election after The New York Times revealed the meeting was sold to Trump Jr. as an opportunity to obtain damaging information related to the Clinton campaign. Emails released by Trump Jr., in which he responded “if it’s what you say I love it,” to publicist Rob Goldstone’s offer of opposition research against Clinton, corroborated the NYTimes report.

Manafort and White House adviser Jared Kushner, both of whom were present at the June 2016 meeting, have provided congressional testimony, but Trump Jr. has not yet appeared on the Hill in an official capacity.

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s Justice Department probe into Russian meddling was reportedly consulted regarding Trump Jr.’s appearance in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee and did not object.
