California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff wants to bar the Secret Service from paying any money to Trump-connected businesses.

Schiff announced a proposed amendment to appropriations legislation Wednesday that would prohibit the Secret Service from renting or buying anything from any business owned by President Donald Trump or his family.

“None of the funds made available by this Act to the United States Secret Service may be used to purchase, rent, or otherwise acquire goods or services, including hotel rooms, office space, or golf carts, from entities that are owned or operated by the President or the immediate family of the President,” Schiff’s amendment reads.

If passed, the act would likely pose some logistical hurdles for the agents protecting the president. Secret Service agencies would not be allowed to rent golf carts from, say, the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., when the president visits.

“The immense honor and responsibility of serving as president of the United States should never be exploited for profit or personal gain,” Schiff said, according to USA Today. “That the Trump Organization is profiting off the Secret Service is an abuse of taxpayer money and an improper method of enrichment.”

Schiff proposed his amendment through the House Committee on Rules, which can strike any rules the majority deems inappropriate.

The Secret Service used to rent space at Trump Tower in New York, several stories below Trump’s non-White House residence, but then moved its security operations outside the building due to a leasing dispute, the New York Times reported earlier this summer.

The U.S. Secret Service did not return The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment in time for publication.
