GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona is slated to return to work in Washington, D.C., next week after having completed his first round of chemotherapy in mid-August.

McCain — one of the most influential voices on foreign policy and defense issues in the upper chamber — was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer in July. The Arizona Republican, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, is expected to lead debate on the National Defense Reauthorization Act, shortly after his arrival.

“Senator McCain will return to the U.S. Senate next week as Congress begins a new legislative session and looks forward to continuing his work for the people of Arizona and the nation,” his office told Fox News in a statement Wednesday.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly slammed the senator in recent weeks for being one of the three GOP senators to vote against the motion to proceed on a scaled-back version of the Obamacare repeal and replacement bill in late July.

Lawmakers are gearing up for what is expected to be a hectic September when they return from their August recess. Congress faces pressing issues, including the debt ceiling and passing legislation to keep the government funded.

McCain turned 81 years old on Tuesday.
