Texas Sen. Ted Cruz stood on a boat in Houston for a Thursday interview with “Fox and Friends,” telling his fellow Texans that “we’ll come through this” adversity from Hurricane Harvey.

“We’ll come through this. We will. This first stage has just been saving lives,” Cruz said. “It has been responding to the immediate crisis. Crisis is still ongoing. It’s in East Texas, Beaumont. Big chunks of I-10 freeway are completely underwater. It’s like you’re looking at the Gulf of Mexico.”

The senator cited the heroism of Sgt. Steve Perez, the police officer that died on his way to work, and said it’s stories like his that have saved the city of Houston.

“It’s been the incredible story of Hurricane Harvey, is just the heroism we’ve seen over and over and over again. You look at the Houston police officer that was killed. Sgt. Perez. He came in, his wife begged him not to go. Said the water’s too high. Don’t go in. He drove in anyway … and got caught in fast moving water, lost his life. Those are the stories of bravery we’re seeing one after the other after the other, and it’s really what’s saved Houston throughout this storm,” Cruz said.

He added that natural disasters like the hurricane should facilitate a new mood in D.C. that is less divisive and more focused on unity.

“You think about politics in Washington where everything is nasty and total warfare all the time, and I don’t think it has to be that way. And I think something like this reminds us, we’ve got a lot more that brings us together than divides us,” Cruz said.
