Three masked men ambushed and killed a disabled Marine Corps veteran in his own garage on Friday while he tried to prevent the intruders from invading his home.

The 48-year-old homeowner from Stone Mountain, Ga., was in his garage at 6 a.m. EST on Friday preparing to take his wife to work when three men approached the house and assaulted him, Fox5 reports.

Phillip Lamar Davis, the Marine veteran, attempted to defend his wife, which led to a desperate struggle with the masked intruders. Davis was shot multiple times in the process, but his wife was able to run out of the garage and scream for help from neighbors.

“She was just screaming, ‘There’s gunshots, there’s gunshots. Get here right now,'” Daphne Sinclair, Davis’ sister-in-law, told WSBTV. “She heard the gunshots and she ran to a neighbor’s house saying, ‘Call 911.'”

“Like they say, you never think it’s going to happen to your family, but it did,” Lorenzo Sinclair, the wife’s father, told Palm Beach Post.

Police arrived on the scene and pronounced Davis dead.

Davis married his high school sweetheart last year.

The three men escaped, and the police are currently searching for their whereabouts with K-9 units.

“We are trying to track scents of the suspects to see which directions they may have gone,” DeKalb County Police spokesperson Shiera Campbell said, according to Palm Beach Post.
