Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would like to improve the degrading diplomatic situation with the United States, but said it’s “naive” to ask whether he’s disappointed with U.S. President Donald Trump.

“He’s not my bride, and I’m also not his bride or groom,” Putin said during the BRICS summit in China Tuesday.

“Trump is guided by the national interests of his country, and I by mine. I very much hope that we will be able, as the current U.S. president has said, to reach some compromise in resolving bilateral and international problems,” Putin said.

Both Russia and the U.S. have been trading diplomatic volleys, mostly expressed in kicking out some of the other country’s envoys and diplomatic staff.

The Department of State announced Thursday that Russia will have to close down three posts across the U.S., including a Consulate General in San Francisco, a chancery annex in Washington, D.C., and a consular annex in New York City.

The latest decision was due to “unwarranted and detrimental to the overall relationship between our countries” after Russia expelled 3,000 U.S. diplomatic staff from Moscow late July, according to State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert.

The dispute began after President Barack Obama expelled several Russian officials and reclaim two diplomatic compounds suspected of being intelligence bases in New York and Maryland. The move was a response to Russia’s suspected meddling in the U.S. presidential election process.

Several members of Trump’s former staff and some of his advisors are under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for suspected improper contact with Russian officials during the presidential campaign.
