Report: Trump, Schumer Agree To Pursue Debt Ceiling Repeal

According to a report, President Donald Trump and Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer (NY) have agreed to work together to repeal the debt ceiling.

Three sources told The Washington Post that the pair discussed plans to remove the requirement that Congress repeatedly vote to raise the debt ceiling.

Trump and Schumer met in the Oval Office on Wednesday and apparently struck a “gentleman’s agreement” to pursue the repeal together.

“The President encouraged Congressional leaders to find a more permanent solution to the debt ceiling so the vote is not so frequently politicized,” said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

One source said Vice President Mike Pence may be open to the idea of a “permanent solution” if raising the debt ceiling were tied to Congress passing a budget.

However, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) seemed opposed to the agreement, stating in a press conference Thursday that he believes there is a “legitimate role for the power of the purse of the Article 1 powers and that’s something we defend here in Congress.”
