President Donald Trump promised Florida Gov. Rick Scott “all the federal resources” he needs to help offset the damage from Hurricane Irma, according to an interview with “Fox and Friends” Monday.
“We have so much damage right now around the state. We’re drawing every resources we can. Locally, at the state and federal government. President Trump has promised me all the federal resource I need,” Scott said of the devastation. “I hope everybody continues to pray for our state.”
Scott said the Florida Keys and Marco Islands were hit hard, and he’s been in constant contact with Trump and FEMA as they continue to get food and water to those who need it.
“The Keys I’m very concerned about. The Marco island area, we have a lot of concerns about that. We’ve got a lot of power out … we are doing everything we can do get food and water throughout the state. I spoke with the president three times yesterday. And I spoke with the administrator Brook Long of FEMA yesterday,” Scott said. “Everybody is working to get assets here. Get our power back on. I’m working to get fuel back in the state, get our ports open. So we’re working hard to get our state back to normal but most importantly we’ve got to save every life, and we’ve got to make sure people understand it’s still dangerous.”
Scott cautioned Floridians to stay off the streets, specifically around downed power lines and stressed patience as state, local and federal officials formulate a plan to deal with the storm’s blow-back.
“Power lines are down throughout the state. We’ve got roads that are impassable right now. So everybody’s got to be patient as we work through this,” he said. “It’s going to take some time. We’ve got to make sure it’s safe. We’ve got to get the power lines back up. You cannot be around downed power lines. Just don’t be around it. If there’s any flooding we’ve got to let that water go down. We’ve got to make sure these roads are passable.”
“I don’t want to lose any life after this storm,” Scott added. “We worked hard to get people to evacuate. We want everybody to survive this storm.”
