Apple CEO Tim Cook and associates introduced the company’s latest smartphones Tuesday called the “iPhone 8” and “iPhone X” during a special product unveiling event in the newly established Steve Jobs Theater.

Some of the most notable features of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, according to Apple, include:

  • The “most durable glass”
  • Stereo speakers that are 25 percent louder than the iPhone 7, including an amplified bass
  • Dual cameras and an all-new 12 mega pixel sensor that allows new lights and colors to show in pictures, creating very high-quality images
  • “A11 Bionic,” “the most powerful and smartest chip in a smartphone,” which is expected to boost performance speeds. The proprietary A11 Bionic computer chip will allow fluid access and operations for games, including 3-D ones
  • Augmented reality, which can seamlessly overlay additional content onto the real world. Apple has been developing video games to create an ultra-authentic video game experience. “It’s not like you’re controlling the game, you’re in the game.”
  • Wireless charging through “AirPower,” a station that requires contact, rather than chords for giving devices energy. Apple is working with other companies so they can offer wireless charging stations at their locations
  • Starts at twice the gigabyte (GB) capacity of the iPhone 7

The iPhone 8 will cost $699 and iPhone 8 Plus $799. Would-be consumers can pre-order the respective devices Sept. 15. It will be fully available Sept. 22.

“iPhone 8, a new generation of iPhone and a huge step forward,” Tim Cook concluded, before dramatically introducing “one more thing,” which will “set the technology for the next decade.”

The iPhone X (as in the tenth Roman numeral) has many of the same new features as the iPhone 8, and more, including:

  • All-glass design
  • “Super Retina display,” which is edgeless, 5.8 inches diagonally and more than 2.7 million pixels, the densest pixel resolution for any smartphone. Improves upon the traditional OLED display
  • No tangible home button due to the extended display. Swiping up from the bottom will replace the former input
  • Face ID: A biometric security capability that allows users to lock and unlock their devices with their unique facial characteristics and measurements. Using multiple advanced cameras, Apple essentially creates a “mathematical model of your face” in real-time to automatically detect if the holder of the phone is the true owner. Users can now “Unlock your phone with just a glance”
  • “A11 bionic neural engine” chip, a proprietary technology that, among many other aspects, analyzes interconnected neurons to define a recognizable blueprint. It’s part of the Face ID program. No matter what a user wears or changes to their exterior appearance, the embedded computer system will identify the authentic owner. Not even pictures of the owner will fool the technology, according to Apple. The chance that a random person can unlock someone else’s phone is 1 in one million
  • Animated, customizable, and interactive emojis
  • Along with wireless charging, battery life typically lasts two more hours than the iPhone 7. It also expects several new products (even from other companies) to spring up in upcoming months to enhance the possibilities for wireless charging

As Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, said during his part of the introduction, the iPhone X is something they at Apple “have been dreaming about.”

The iPhone X comes with two different memory capacities, 64GB and 256GB. People can pre-order the iPhone X October 27, and it will be available November 3 at a cost of $999. (RELATED: In Honor Of The Soon-To-Be-Released iPhone 8, Here’s A Look Back At Every iPhone)

“Our vision has always been to create an iPhone that is entirely screen. One so immersive the device itself disappears into the experience. And so intelligent it can respond to a tap, your voice, and even a glance,” Apple wrote on its website announcing the product. “With iPhone X, that vision is now a reality. Say hello to the future.”
