North Korea launched a ballistic missile out of the capital and over Japan Friday, further escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

“North Korea fired an unidentified missile eastward from the vicinity of Pyongyang this morning,” the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff revealed to Yonhap News Agency. The missile flew over northern Japan and landed around 1,200 miles east of Hokkaido, according to NHK.

South Korea says the missile traveled roughly 2,300 miles, far enough for North Korea to strike Guam were that the intended target.

The last time North Korea fired a ballistic missile from a site near the capital, the rogue regime launched a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile over northern Japan. Afterwards, North Korea warned that it would regularly launch missiles into the Pacific to enhance its overall combat capabilities.

U.S. Pacific Command has confirmed that North Korea once again launched an IRBM.

Earlier in the week, the United Nations Security Council unanimously agreed to impose stringent sanctions on North Korea for its test of a possible staged thermonuclear weapon earlier this month.

In response, the North threatened to beat the U.S. to death like a rabid dog, sink Japan into the sea, and wipe out South Korea with fire.
