A group of people displayed a banner Wednesday reading “Racism is as American as baseball” over the the famous Green Monster at the Boston Red Sox’s Fenway Park.

One of the participants of the protest said it’s “ridiculous” that antifa’s Boston chapter is claiming responsibility for hanging the schismatic sign, reports CSN NE. The group member, who remained anonymous, said they were anti-racist protestors and not part of the violent group.

Security eventually ejected the people responsible and removed their condemning sign, but not before it was draped for a few minutes for all attending baseball fans to see, according to Deadspin.

“During the 4th inning of tonight’s game, four fans unfurled a banner over the left field wall in violation of the club’s policy prohibiting signs of any kind to be hung or affixed to the ballpark,” The Red Sox said in an official statement. “The individuals involved were escorted out of Fenway Park.”

An honorary ceremony for a U.S. military veteran was occurring at almost the exact moment the banner was unfurled. The group member, however, told CSN NE that was merely coincidental and not intended.

Relatively well-known umpire Joe West held an impromptu meeting with Boston police as well as stadium security to discuss having the protesters removed, according to ESPN writer Marly Rivera.

There are no reports of the demonstrators getting arrested or banned from the park for violating the rules.
