Week three of college football is done, and it was another great Saturday of games.
These are the four few key observations I’m taking away from week three.
1) The Big Ten dominates again.
The Big Ten absolutely wrecked its competition once again. The conference as a whole went 9-2 this weekend, but it’s what the teams at the top did that was most impressive. Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin all walked to victory. Air Force kept it close with Michigan before the Wolverines took control late in the game.
Purdue, one of the worst teams in the conference, went to Missouri of the SEC and laid down a 35-3 beatdown. You know the conference is firing on all cylinders when Purdue casually walks into SEC territory and wins by 32.
2) The Wisconsin Badgers might be for real.
I’m always hesitant to praise the Badgers too much. I might be the biggest fan, but I’m often also the biggest critic. However, I have nothing to complain about after their 40-6 victory over BYU. Quarterback Alex Hornibrook went 18/19 through the air for 256 yards and four touchdowns. The team also added another 235 yards on the ground.
Winning at BYU isn’t easy. Blowing out BYU in their place is essentially never heard of. I don’t want to jump the gun, but my Badgers look like a playoff contender.
3) Alabama won’t be challenged at all in the SEC.
I thought LSU was the only team in the entire SEC that could possibly keep it close with Alabama. Well, that’s not going to happen. LSU got obliterated against Mississippi State. It wasn’t even close at any point, and I’m embarrassed for myself that I thought it would be. LSU’s defeat is the clearest sign we’ve had so far that the Crimson Tide are going to walk through their conference schedule.
4) Louisville got exposed for what they are.
First off, Louisville shouldn’t be ashamed that they lost to Clemson. The Tigers are a great team, and I expected them to win. There’s nothing wrong with losing to a better team.
Having said that, the Cardinals were exposed for being a one man team. Lamar Jackson is the only reason they were able to get any points at all during their 47-21 blowout loss to Clemson. They’ll always be solid enough to beat above average teams with Jackson, but elite teams will almost always find a way to bottle up Jackson.
My current playoff picture is:
1) Alabama
2) Oklahoma
3) Clemson
4) Penn State
