Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told NBC’s Lester Holt in an interview Tuesday that Iran may continue its nuclear program if President Trump backs out of the Iran deal.

Rouhani said that Iran’s commitment to denuclearize “would no longer exist” if Trump ends the deal.

Rouhani also believes that if the United States reneges on the deal, trust in America will drastically decrease on the world stage.

“The exiting of the United States from such an agreement would carry a high cost, meaning that subsequent to such an action by the United States of America, no one will trust America again,” he claimed.

“Every word was analyzed many times by countries involved before its ratification, so if the United States were to not adhere to the commitments and trample upon this agreement, this will mean that it will carry with it the lack of subsequent trust from countries towards the United States because the greatest capital that any country has is trust and credibility,” he added.

Under the Iran deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the Persian state reduced its nuclear program in return for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Trump took aim at Iran in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday, referring to the country’s government as a “murderous regime” and the Iran deal as an “embarrassment.” (RELATED: Trump: Iran Deal Is An ‘Embarrassment’ [VIDEO])
