Cleanup crews in Mexico City have been calling for periods of complete silence in an attempt to locate missing people following Tuesday’s devastating earthquake.

The 7.1-magnitude earthquake destroyed dozens of building and killed at least 217 people, with many residents, children, and businesspeople still missing, according to Bloomberg. Finding survivors among destroyed buildings and rubble has presented quite a challenge for paramedics, police, and volunteers. As a result, they began calling for silence Tuesday night to be able to hear cries for help in the piles of debris.

“When you see these types of problems, you have no choice but to come and help,” said Francisco Javier Aguilar, a 43-year-old industrial waste worker who volunteered to help out with the dire situation.

“We can hear small noises, but we don’t know if they’re coming from above or below, from the walls above, or someone below calling for help,” said Dr. Pedro Serrano, a rescue volunteer worker that successfully crawled into a collapsed school only to find all the occupants dead from the earthquake, according to the New York Post.

Approximately 20 million residents are currently sleeping on the city streets, and authorities and volunteers are distributing food and water in tents.
