A child fatally shot herself Sept. 14 while simply reaching for candy in her grandmother’s purse in Tampa, Fla.

Yanelly “Nelly” Zoller, 4, tragically shot herself while at her grandparents’ house, The Associated Press reported Thursday. The young girl found a gun in the purse, accidentally pulled the lever, and shot herself in the chest.

“She just wanted some damn candy,” her father, Shane Zoller, 22, told the Tampa Bay Times on Wednesday.

Zoller shares custody of Nelly with her mother, and said that Nelly had a good relationship with her grandparents, Michael and Christie Zoller.

“I was driving to pick her up with her bathing suit in my car to take her to the splash pads,” said Zoller. “When I pulled up, that’s when I saw all the police lights.”

Tampa police are currently investigating the case.
