The revolt of the football players has spread to Canada. The Canadian Football League (CFL) has joined the national anthem protest, CBC reported.
On Sunday, before the game between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Calgary Stampeders, the Roughriders players locked arms in solidarity while “O Canada” was sung before fans in Regina, Saskatchewan.
The now cross-border protest was spurred by comments made by President Trump. At a Friday night rally in Huntsville, Alabama in support of Sen. Luther Strange, Trump urged team owners to remove any player who kneels during the playing of the national anthem.
“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. He is fired!'” Trump said.
He reiterated those sentiments on Twitter the following day and said players who choose to use the anthem for political protest should be fired.
On Sunday, a host of NFL players expanded the anthem protest in response to Trump’s comments by linking arms or staying in the locker room. Others continued to kneel.
