Atheists across the nation decried Judge Roy Moore’s Tuesday victory in the Alabama Republican primary, saying his commitment to Christianity jeopardized the country.

The Secular Coalition of America issued a statement Wednesday lambasting Moore after his victory over Alabama Sen. Luther Strange for his various public assertions that America is a Christian nation and his hard stance against homosexuality and abortion. Representatives of the coalition called Moore a threat to religious liberty for his alleged “commitment to Christian supremacy.”

“Throughout his career and his campaign, Judge Moore has flaunted his disregard for the Constitution and unapologetically asserted that his religious beliefs must take precedence over the law,”  Larry T. Decker, Executive Director of the SCA, said in the statement. “Judge Moore’s approach to politics is an attack on the separation of church and state and a rejection of the rule of the law.”

Decker continued his impassioned tirade against Moore, after claiming that the SCA “does not endorse or oppose political candidates.”

Moore has been known to lock horns with others in government over some of his religiously motivated stances and has gained notoriety for his refusal to back down, or stay down, in the face of consequence. Moore was removed from the Alabama Supreme Court twice — once in 2003 for his refusal to comply with the federally mandated removal of a Ten Commandments display on public ground and again in 2016 for upholding a state ban on gay marriage.

“What I think is that it was illegal under the law, that the Supreme Court usurped the role of the legislature and ruled something about our moral law that is improper, and that’s what we’re finding the Supreme Court and the federal district courts are doing daily,” Moore told CSPAN’s Bill Press. “They’ve usurped the moral prerogative.”

“Homosexual conduct should be illegal, yes,” Moore added.

Moore also asserted that America’s embrace of abortion and sodomy caused, in part, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, during his Feb. 5 address before Open Door Baptist Church.

Moore restated his stance against abortion and homosexuality among a host of other societal ills in a Sept. 21 debate with Strange in which Moore claimed that America needed to unite under God to be healed, according to Fox News.

“Our foundation has been shaken. Crime, corruption, immorality, abortion, sodomy, sexual perversion sweep our land,”Moore said. “When we become one nation under God again, when liberty and justice for all reigns across our land, we will be truly good again.”

While atheists claim that Moore’s victory heralds doom for the country, others like former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg hail Moore as a champion of American ideals.

“Judge Moore is an American hero who will be a tremendous asset to the President in the Senate. So tonight is actually a yuge victory for President Trump,” Nunberg told The Daily Caller’s Alex Pfeiffer.

As Moore marches forward down the campaign trail and prepares to square off against Democratic nominee Doug Jones, the SCA vows to fight him every step of the way.

“If Moore wins the general election and makes it to Washington, we’ll be here waiting for him,” Decker said in the SCA statement.
