Catalonian authorities have reported 840 injuries during clashes between Spanish police and voters Sunday as the region tried to hold an independence referendum.

The Spanish government tried to prevent people from voting by sealing off a majority of the more than 2,000 voting locations. A video shows how police officers stormed into a school and seized ballot boxes.

The government defended the use of force as necessary to block what it considers to be an unconstitutional vote. Catalan leaders, on the other hand, slammed police for initiating the violence.

“Police brutality will shame forever the Spanish state,” Catalan President Carles Puigdemont told a crowd of supporters, according to The Associated Press.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy rejected the referendum attempt and said no vote took place.
