NBC’s Pete Williams claimed Monday that authorities “can never say for sure” what led James T. Hodgkinson to open fire on a GOP congressional baseball practice in June.

Williams said on MSNBC that authorities still do not know the motive behind the mass shooting on a Las Vegas country music festival last night, and compared that to the June shooting that injured House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and four others.

“The authorities can never say for sure what drove [Hodgkinson] in that case,” Williams said. “His life was falling apart, he was experiencing financial problems, he was depressed, he came here, he said, hoping to talk to federal officials about taxes.”

Hodgkinson was a left-wing activist who had previously worked on Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign and was found carrying an assassination list with names of Republican members of the House Freedom Caucus. (RELATED: Assassination List Found On James Hodgkinson’s Body)

“But why he targeted Republicans, what specifically he had in mind here, they’ve never answered that question,” Williams said, guessing people may never get an answer about the Las Vegas shooting either.
