Passengers evacuated a train in London Monday when a man began reading Bible passages out loud.

The train was en route to Wimbledon station when a man started reading Bible verses and referring to “doomsday” and the afterlife, the BBC reported. Passengers quickly self-evacuated from the train around 8:30 a.m., believing that the passenger was acting erratically and causing 12-hour delays on the route.

“He said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to talk to you about something and that something is the word of the Lord, Jesus Christ. He’s here to heal your sins. The Bible tells you that homosexuality is a sin and sex before marriage is a sin. You need to repent,'” train passenger Ian O’Sullivan said.

Some passengers pried open the doors and climbed out onto the tracks, fearing for their safety.

A guard boarded the train, talked to the man, and “established pretty quickly that there wasn’t a threat,” according to O’Sullivan.

“Panic could have broken out but for the guard’s calm and measured response. This was a packed passenger train at the height of the rush hour. It illustrates just why RMT members are fighting so hard to keep the guard on South Western Railway services,” said Mick Cash, the Rail, Maritime and Transport union’s general secretary.

Police searched the man but he was not arrested.
