A man allegedly stuffed snakes into his socks to hide them from investigators and smuggle them across the Canadian border, and he pleaded guilty to the charges Tuesday.

Chaoyi Le, 38, a Chinese citizen that lives in Canada, pleaded guilty to violating wildlife regulations by sneaking three live albino hognose snakes across the Canadian border, which agents found hidden in his socks, the Associated Press reported.

Le said his primary motive was to avoid the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Inspection, although why he chose socks as his mode of transportation is unknown. He also admitted to mailing snakes from New York to China on the same day as the smuggling event, according to court documents. He originally claimed that he found them at a New York park, and said he didn’t purchase the snakes.

Le is set to be sentenced Oct. 30, and will face up to five years in prison.
