Coglianese, speaking on WMAL’s “Mornings on the Mall” asked, “Less than 2 percent of all deaths are at the hands of what we call assault rifles. Most of these are pistols, that people are dying at the hands of, and one would think if we’re going to take on gun violence, that, and you believe that its really the fault of the guns existing in public, that that’s where you would start. But why is it that the focus is on assault rifles all the time.”

Sen. Cardin answered that, “it’s broader than that,” adding that the “there are more issues than just one on gun violence in America.” Cardin also pointed out that “universal background checks have loopholes that can allow guns to fall into the wrong hands.”

“The question is how can we avoid some of these tragedies,” the senator said.
