GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham introduced the Pain-Capable Child Protection Act to the Senate on Thursday, the latest legislation looking to curb abortion.

The bill, also known as the 20-week abortion ban, states that no unborn baby past 20 weeks gestation can be aborted except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. Abortion providers that violate the law will be penalized and could be sentenced to five years in prison. (Related: House Passes Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act).

That the Senate has introduced the bill just two days after it passed with a strong vote in the House gives hope to many pro-life groups who have worked to promote and pass such legislation.

Graham appears to have taken the advice of GOP Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona who urged the Senate to pass the 20-week abortion bill. “American voters agree – no pain capable baby should have to undergo agonizing dismemberment in an elective late term abortion,” Frank wrote in a Wednesday editorial. (Related:GOP Rep: Congress Must Pass 20-Week Abortion Ban).

“I don’t believe abortion, five months into pregnancy, makes us a better nation,” Graham said according to the Hill. “America is at her best when she’s standing up for the least among us, and the sooner we pass this legislation into law, the better. We are on the right side of history.”

“Now it’s time for the pro-life majority in the Senate, led by pro-life champion Lindsey Graham, to force vulnerable pro-abortion Senators up in 2018 to either stand with their pro-life constituents and vote for this bill, or stand with the extreme abortion lobby and vote in favor of late-term abortion on-demand,” said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser after the House vote. It looks like Graham was listening.

The Republican senator has the support of 45 GOP senators, and pro-life advocates are hopeful that the ban may pass in the Senate like it was previously unable to do.
