Democratic California Rep. Linda Sanchez, a top ranking House Democrat, said it’s time for Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to pass the leadership torch to a new generation in a interview Thursday.

Sanchez told reporters from The Washington Post, who were conducting the interview on C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers,” that although she thinks there is talent within the Democratic caucus, it is time for new leadership for their party.

“I do think we have this real breadth and depth of talent within our caucus and I do think it’s time to pass a torch to a new generation of leaders, and I want to be a part of that transition,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez is the vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus and the fifth ranking House Democrat. She said other members in her party deserve the opportunity to lead. “I want to see that happen. I think we have too many great members here that don’t always get the opportunities that they should. I would like to see that change,” she said.

She is not the first member of the Democratic party to criticize Pelosi and House leadership. Ohio Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan attacked his own party and Pelosi in June and July, calling the Democrat’s brand “toxic” and criticizing Pelosi by saying that she is more toxic than President Donald Trump as well as saying the Democratic party has no national leader. Sanchez also said it was time for House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer and House Assistant Minority Leader James Clyburn to go as well as Pelosi who have all been in leadership positions for over a decade.

“They are all of the same generation and again, their contributions to the Congress and the caucus are substantial. But I think there comes a time when you need to pass that torch. And I think it’s time,” Sanchez said.
