New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman vowed Monday to sue the Trump administration for repealing an Obama-era regulation Republicans consider a weapon against the coal industry.
Schneiderman, who considers himself one of President Donald Trump’s fiercest opponents, said in a statement that he would use every tool in his belt to fight the president’s decision to peel back the Clean Power Plan (CPP), a rule designed to reduce greenhouse gas emission from coal power plants.
“The Trump administration’s persistent and indefensible denial of climate change — and their continued assault on actions essential to stemming its increasing devastation — is reprehensible, and I will use every available legal tool to fight their dangerous agenda,” he said.
EPA Chief Scott Pruitt argued Monday that the Obama administration overstepped its legal authority when it issued the 2015 regulation. He announced his intention to withdraw from the CPP to applause from a crowd gathered at a mining event Monday.
“It’s Congress that passes legislation that gives us direction, that gives us our orders as far as how we administer the statute,” Pruitt said in a statement Monday. “The last administration simply made it up.”
Trump campaigned during the presidential election on rolling back a slew of former President Barack Obama’s climate regulation, including the Paris climate agreement and the so-called waters of the United States rule.
