A Miami Beach police officer fatally shot a woman driving a BMW Sunday night after she allegedly tried to run over a police officer.

The woman ran a red light and then rammed into a Mercedes with two people in it, reports CBS News. After running into the car, an officer tried to pursue her on foot, but she ran into him as well, Police Chief Daniel Oates said in a press conference.

“The car was coming westbound from Ocean on 12th and went through the red light, struck an occupied car on 12th and Collins,” Oates said. “At some point, the driver made a decision to speed away and she continued west on 12th Street.”

Another police officer began shooting at the car, causing the driver to lose control and crash into another car.

“She started the car and ran away,” witness Miguel Garcia told CBS News. “She was, like, going over the policeman in front of her, the officer. At that point the other cop started shooting. I heard like shots, like four or five shots, like ‘pow, pow, pow, pow!’ And then the car lost control.”

Authorities said the woman died from her injuries at the hospital, while the officer she ran over remained conscious and seems to be in good condition.

“Our officer who was injured, we know he lost consciousness at the scene for a period of time,” Oates said. “He is now at the hospital. He is stable and alert but he is being treated for his head injury and undetermined at this time internal injuries.”

Police said they are currently investigating the shooting.
