President Donald Trump wished the Navy a happy 242nd birthday on Friday and asked God to bless the men and women serving.

Trump commended the service of sailors and the Navy’s ability to fend off rogue nations in a White House statement Friday.

“Today, we recognize generations of brave men and women who have served in the United States Navy,” Trump said. “Through their courage, selfless service, and unmatched professionalism, America’s sailors have projected American power on the seas, on land, and in the air. Today, the Navy continues to deter our enemies and confront the threats posed by terrorists and rogue nations around the world.”

“As we proudly celebrate the legacy of our Navy, we are all reminded of the duty we share to support our service members, military families, and veterans,” Trump added.

He noted in his statement that just this year he commissioned the USS Gerald R. Ford, the first new aircraft carrier design since the USS Nimitz, into service.

“May God bless the men and women of our great Navy and all our Armed Forces. And may He continue to bless the United States of America,” Trump said.

Navy Secretary Richard V. Spencer also wished the Navy a happy birthday on Friday to commemorate the service’s 242nd anniversary.

“I challenge every one of you to join me in shaping a Navy of tomorrow that is worthy of the legacy we celebrate today,” Spencer said. “My wife Polly and I are forever grateful for all that you, your families, and your loved ones do for our nation. Happy birthday, shipmates. God bless you and God bless the United States Navy.”

The Navy’s tradition dates back to 1775, when the Continental Congress created a naval force to push back against the British Navy and British commercial vessels.
