Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton defended National Football League (NFL) players who take a knee during the national anthem, saying in an interview Sunday that this type of protesting is not against “our anthem or our flag.”

The former Democratic presidential candidate was in London to promote her new book “What Happened,” when she referenced the NFL players who protest during the anthem.

“That’s what black athletes kneeling was all about,” Clinton said in response to a question protesting Trump’s agenda. “That’s not against our anthem or our flag.”

Kneeling for the national anthem is a “reverent position,” Clinton said. She told those in attendance that it is a good way to protest the “racism and injustice” in the U.S.

“Actually, kneeling is a reverent position,” she continued. “It was to demonstrate in a peaceful way against racism and injustice in our criminal system.”

Clinton urged the Democratic Party to continue to “resist” the president, saying “I think it would be a grave error for Democrats to recede from those fights, so therefore we have to stand up, fight back, resist.”
