A man recently freed from Taliban captivity after five years in Afghanistan did not believe his captors when they told him Donald Trump was president of the U.S.
Taliban-affiliated militants held Joshua Boyle prisoner along with Boyle’s wife and three children. One of the captors told Boyle Trump was elected president before he was forced to film a “proof-of-life” video.
“It didn’t enter my mind that he was being serious,” Boyle said in an interview with The Toronto Star.
The family was freed after U.S. intelligence directed Pakistani military to their location, U.S. officials said Thursday. Boyle is from Canada and did not even know Justin Trudeau was Canada’s prime minister until the rescue. The family is now safely back home in Canada and recovering from the long and painful imprisonment.
Trump commended the rescue operation in a statement Thursday, saying the model could be used for future joint operations between the U.S. and Pakistan to free Taliban-held hostages.
