Editor at large of The Weekly Standard Bill Kristol took a shot at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on MSNBC Tuesday, when he called him and other Republicans “pathetic” for publicly supporting President Donald Trump.

“You stand there and basically, you have to say nice things about Donald Trump. ‘We’ve been friends for a long time. I look forward to working with him.’ It’s pathetic. As Joe says, they should have a little more self respect,” Kristol said during a “Morning Joe” interview.

McConnell and Trump held a press conference in the Rose Garden Monday covering a range of issues, including their personal relationship. Kristol thought McConnell let himself be humiliated.

“They all seem willing to be humiliated by Donald Trump,” Kristol added. “They want to get tax cuts. They wanted Gorsuch, now they want tax cuts. Tax cuts is the huge shinny bobble that justifies humiliating yourself.”

Kristol said McConnell and other Republicans don’t have to attack Trump directly, but should stop showing support for him in public.

“He [McConnell] doesn’t have to go around attacking Donald Trump every day, but just don’t go to a lunch. Don’t go stand out next to him for forty minutes while Donald Trump freelances at a press availability. But Trump loves it. Trump likes humiliating people,” Kristol said.

He accused Trump of creating a crisis among establishment Republicans on purpose, forcing them to turn to the White House for help.

“They need Trump to save them from an insurgency that he himself is sort of fostering and aiding. So from Trump’s point of view he’s got everyone kind of depending on him. Everyone sucking up to him, but it’s not healthy,” Kristol concluded.
