University of California president Janet Napolitano said Friday that universities should avoid restricting speech that is offensive or hateful.

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” the hosts asked Napolitano if it was frustrating that large amounts of money are being used for speaker security, and she said while it is unfortunate it is also “necessary.”
Napolitano argued that disrespect for the First Amendment seems to be a generational issue and universities need to educate students about the importance of free speech.
“I think that we have to do a much better job at educating our young people about the First Amendment and what it means,” she said. “We are educators and that should be part of our mission.”
“We see an increasing number of young people believe that we should restrict people like Richard Spencer, Milo Yiannopolous, or Ben Shapiro from speaking at campuses,” she explained. “We must remind them that in the past it was speakers favoring, say, the civil rights movement who were sought to be restricted.”
